2000A, 3000A, 4000A and 6000A Switchboards

UL 891 switchboards are available in high-amperage configurations for main distribution applications. Our range covers 2000A, 2500A, 3000A, 4000A, 5000A, and 6000A bus ratings.

Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB)

UL 489 listed molded case breakers in frame sizes from 400A to 6000A. Available in thermal-magnetic or electronic trip units. Suitable for switchboards up to moderate ampacity requirements.

Air Circuit Breakers (ACB)

UL 1066 listed power circuit breakers for applications requiring higher continuous current ratings and adjustable long-time, short-time, and instantaneous trip settings. Typical frame sizes: 800A–6000A. ACBs are commonly specified for 2000A and above.

Main-Tie-Main (MTM)

Dual main breaker configuration with a normally-open tie breaker between two bus sections. Used in service entrance applications where two utility feeds supply a single facility. Tie breaker includes mechanical interlocking to prevent parallel operation of sources.

Main Lug Only (MLO)

Switchboard sections without a main disconnect, fed from an upstream device. Common in distribution boards where the upstream switchboard or transformer secondary provides overcurrent protection.

NEMA 1 and NEMA 3R Switchboard Enclosures

NEMA 1 — Indoor

Standard indoor enclosure per NEMA 250 for switchboards installed in electrical rooms or mechanical spaces. Constructed from 11-gauge (3.0mm) cold-rolled steel with a removable front and rear cover. Finished with ANSI 61 gray powder coat.

NEMA 3R — Outdoor

Outdoor-rated enclosure with rainproof construction, drip shields, and conduit hubs per NEMA 250. Suitable for switchboards installed in uncovered exterior locations. Same 11-gauge steel construction with additional gasketing at cover joints.

Both enclosure types support top-entry and bottom-entry cable connections. We provide conduit entry templates based on the project's cable schedule.

SCCR and Short-Circuit Rating

NEC 408.36 requires that every switchboard be marked with a Short-Circuit Current Rating (SCCR). The SCCR must equal or exceed the available fault current at the point of installation.

SCCR is determined based on the system design, selected protective devices, bus configuration, and applicable certification requirements. We provide SCCR documentation with each UL 891 switchboard.

SCCR options available depending on configuration and certification basis. For applications requiring supplemental short-circuit protection, we use listed supplemental protectors or current-limiting devices as part of the SCCR calculation.

Main Breaker and Feeder Configurations

Each UL 891 switchboard is configured with main and feeder devices based on the project single-line diagram and load schedule.

  • UL 489 circuit breakers, bolt-on or plug-in type
  • Frame sizes from 15A to 6000A
  • Thermal-magnetic or electronic trip units
  • Shunt trip coils for remote tripping
  • Auxiliary contacts for status indication
  • Ground fault protection where required by NEC 230.95

Bus System

Electroplated copper or tin-plated aluminum bus bars with flame-retardant PVC or Nomex insulation. Bolted pressure connections ensure low-resistance joints. Phase identification by color-coded insulation per NEC 210.5.

Service Entrance Equipment

UL 891 switchboards are commonly used as service entrance equipment per NEC Article 230. When specified for service entrance duty, we configure the switchboard with 100% rated main breakers, equipment ground bus and neutral bus sized per NEC 250, and ground fault protection where required.

Safety Features

Mechanical door interlocks, padlocking provisions on main breakers, arc-flash mitigation options including arc-resistant designs, and insulated barriers over live parts. Dead-front construction per NEC 408.38.

UL 891 Switchboard Applications

Service Entrance

Main utility disconnect for industrial plants, warehouses, and commercial facilities per NEC Article 230.

UL 891 Switchboard FAQ

What is a UL 891 switchboard?▾
A UL 891 switchboard is a low-voltage power circuit breaker switchboard used for main power distribution in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. It is engineered around the applicable UL 891 standard and NEC Article 408, with bus ratings from 400A to 6000A and system voltages up to 600V AC.
What is the difference between a UL 891 switchboard and UL 1558 switchgear?▾
UL 891 switchboards are generally used for low-voltage power distribution assemblies with molded case or air circuit breakers, governed by NEC Article 408. UL 1558 switchgear is designed for metal-enclosed switchgear applications with the construction, performance, and testing requirements applicable to switchgear. The two serve different application requirements.
What voltage ratings are available for UL 891 switchboards?▾
We build UL 891 switchboards for 208Y/120V, 480Y/277V, and 600V class systems, three-phase, 60Hz. Voltage selection depends on the project electrical system design.
Can you manufacture 2000A, 3000A, 4000A, or 6000A switchboards?▾
Yes. Our UL 891 switchboard range covers 400A through 6000A bus ratings. Higher ampacity switchboards (2000A, 3000A, 4000A, 5000A, 6000A) typically use air circuit breakers (ACB) and may require larger bus configurations. Lead time for high-amperage units is typically 8-12 weeks.
What enclosure types are available?▾
We supply NEMA 1 (indoor) and NEMA 3R (outdoor) enclosures. NEMA 1 enclosures are for electrical room installations. NEMA 3R enclosures include rainproof construction, drip shields, and conduit hubs for exterior installations.
How is SCCR determined for a UL 891 switchboard?▾
SCCR is determined based on the system design, selected protective devices, bus configuration, and applicable certification requirements. NEC 408.36 requires every switchboard to be marked with a SCCR that equals or exceeds the available fault current at the installation point. We provide SCCR documentation with each switchboard.
Can you review our single-line diagram before we place an order?▾
Yes. Send us your SLD and BOM, and our engineering team will provide a technical review and quotation within 24 hours. There is no charge for SLD review or preliminary engineering.
Do you provide NEMA 3R outdoor switchboards?▾
Yes. NEMA 3R switchboards include rainproof construction, drip shields, and conduit hubs for exterior installations. Both NEMA 1 and NEMA 3R enclosures are available across our full ampacity range.
