How to Choose a UL Switchboard Supplier for Your US Project

Selecting the right UL switchboard supplier is critical for project success. The wrong supplier can cause delays, code violations and costly rework. This guide covers the key criteria for evaluating switchboard suppliers for US electrical projects.

6 Criteria for Evaluating UL Switchboard Suppliers

1

UL Listing & Certification

The supplier must have active UL listing for the specific switchboard type (UL 891 or UL 1558). Verify the UL file number and check UL's online directory. A supplier without UL listing cannot legally ship UL-marked equipment to the US.

2

NEC Compliance Knowledge

The supplier must understand NEC requirements including Article 408 (switchboards), Article 409 (industrial control panels), SCCR marking per NEC 408.3 and 409.110, and ground fault protection per NEC 230.95. Ask specific NEC questions during evaluation.

3

Factory Testing Capability

The supplier should perform full factory acceptance testing (FAT) including insulation resistance, contact resistance, bus resistance, mechanical operation, protective relay testing and control circuit functional testing. Request sample test reports.

4

Documentation Quality

US projects require complete English documentation: submittal drawings, SLD, wiring diagrams, BOM, test reports, UL labels and nameplates. Poor documentation causes AHJ inspection failures.

5

Manufacturing Capacity & Lead Time

Verify the supplier can meet your project schedule. Standard lead time for UL 891 switchboards is 8-12 weeks. For large projects with multiple switchboards, ensure the supplier has adequate production capacity.

6

US Project Experience

Suppliers with US project experience understand the documentation requirements, shipping logistics, AHJ expectations and communication standards. Ask for references from similar US projects.
