Switchgear FAQ

What is UL 1558 switchgear?▾
UL 1558 is a standard for low-voltage metal-enclosed switchgear. UL 1558 switchgear is designed for low-voltage power distribution applications with drawout or fixed circuit breakers, metal-enclosed construction, and project-specific ratings for voltage, ampacity, and short-circuit capability. UL 1558 applies to metal-enclosed switchgear assemblies rated 600V or less.
What voltage ratings are available for your switchgear?▾
Our engineering scope can support low- and medium-voltage applications from approximately 1kV to 38kV, depending on the product configuration, applicable standards and project requirements. Low-voltage UL 1558 switchgear covers up to 600V class. Medium-voltage switchgear configurations can be engineered for 1kV, 2.4kV, 4.16kV, 6.6kV, 11kV, 13.8kV, 24kV, 27kV, 33kV and 38kV applications, subject to the applicable technical and certification requirements.
Do you manufacture medium-voltage switchgear?▾
Yes. We provide project-specific medium-voltage switchgear solutions for applications from 1kV to 38kV, subject to the applicable technical and certification requirements. Our medium-voltage switchgear capabilities include metal-enclosed and metal-clad configurations with vacuum circuit breakers, protective relays, metering and control systems.
Is all 1kV–38kV switchgear UL 1558 Listed?▾
No. UL 1558 should not be used as a blanket certification claim for all 1kV–38kV equipment. UL 1558 applies to low-voltage metal-enclosed switchgear rated 600V or less. The applicable standard and certification pathway for medium-voltage equipment depend on the voltage class, product construction and project requirements. Different standards such as ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, CSA, IEC or other applicable requirements may apply depending on the specific configuration.
Can you provide 15kV or 38kV switchgear?▾
Project-specific 15kV, 27kV and 38kV-class configurations can be engineered depending on the required electrical ratings, construction, protection system and applicable standards. Send us your single-line diagram and equipment schedule for a technical review and quotation.
What is the difference between UL 1558 and UL 891?▾
UL 891 switchboards are generally used for low-voltage power distribution assemblies with molded case or insulated case circuit breakers, governed by NEC Article 408. UL 1558 switchgear is designed for low-voltage metal-enclosed switchgear applications with the construction, performance, and testing requirements applicable to switchgear, including drawout circuit breaker configurations.
What is metal-enclosed switchgear?▾
Metal-enclosed switchgear is an assembly of power circuit breakers, protective devices, busbars, and associated equipment housed within a grounded metal enclosure. It provides a higher degree of structural integrity and compartmentalization compared to open-frame switchboards.
Do you offer drawout switchgear?▾
Yes. We supply both low-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear with drawout circuit breaker configurations. Low-voltage UL 1558 switchgear uses air circuit breakers (ACB) in drawout or fixed-mounted configurations. Medium-voltage switchgear uses vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) in drawout or fixed-mounted configurations. Drawout breakers can be removed from the switchgear cell without disconnecting primary conductors, enabling faster maintenance and replacement.
How is the short-circuit rating determined?▾
The short-circuit rating is determined based on the system design, selected protective devices, bus configuration, and applicable certification requirements. We provide short-circuit evaluation and documentation with each switchgear assembly. The SCCR must equal or exceed the available fault current at the installation point.
What certification and testing support do you provide?▾
We provide project-specific engineering documentation, factory acceptance testing, and support for third-party testing, NRTL certification pathways, field evaluation and AHJ documentation as required by the project. Final certification, inspection and AHJ acceptance are subject to the applicable project specifications, codes, standards and authority having jurisdiction.
