Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Installing NEMA 1 outdoors: Even with a roof or canopy, NEMA 1 is not rated for outdoor use. Wind-driven rain and condensation will damage the equipment.
  • Over-specifying NEMA 4 when NEMA 3R is sufficient: NEMA 4 (watertight) costs significantly more than NEMA 3R (rainproof). If the equipment is outdoors but not subject to hose-directed water, NEMA 3R is sufficient.
  • Forgetting conduit hub gaskets: NEMA 3R requires all conduit penetrations to use threaded conduit hubs with gaskets to maintain the watertight seal. Standard knockouts are not acceptable.
  • Ignoring door gasket maintenance: NEMA 3R door gaskets degrade over time due to UV exposure and temperature cycling. Inspect and replace gaskets as part of regular maintenance.

No. A roof or canopy does not convert a NEMA 1 enclosure to NEMA 3R. Wind-driven rain, condensation, and temperature changes can still damage NEMA 1 equipment.
